THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE MONTESSORI METHOD

The Montessori method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori and is based on self-directed, non competitive activities that help children develop strong self-images and confidence. The basic idea in the Montessori philosophy is that "every child carries unseen within him the man he will be become". Children are encouraged to make decisions from an early age which enables them to make appropriate choices and to manage their time well. Children are also encouraged to exchange ideas and to discuss their work with others. These communication skills help ease the child's way into new settings.

THE BENEFITS OF THE MONTESSORI METHOD

Emphasis is on cognitive structures and social development. The child is an active participant in learning. Group and individual instruction adapt to each student's learning style. The Montessori method believes in mixed age grouping. This means that there is a three year age span in each classroom. The children learn from each other. The child chooses his/her own work from their interests and abilities. The child works as long as he/she wishes on a chosen project. The child spots their own errors through feedback on the material and the child uses multi-sensory materials for physical exploration.

THE MONTESSORI CLASSROOM

  • Children work at their own level of ability

  • Freedom to choose is encouraged

  • It is important to let the child concentrate

  • Independence and responsibility of self are characteristics of the classroom

  • Many of the materials are self correcting. This encourages the child to correct his or her work

  • Movement of the entire body is involved in the work activities

  • The classroom is a prepared environment

  • Each child will find interest in some-thing

  • Children learn through repetition
The Areas of the Montessori Classroom

All areas in the classroom strive to meet the following objectives: sense of organization, completion of task, gross and fine motor development, left to right progression, top to bottom progression, hands on experience and sensory experience.

The areas of the classroom are: Practical Life, Sensorial Area, Language Area, Cultural Studies and the Mathematics Area

Work Time

The Montessori classroom includes mixed age groups. Children learn to work together as a community. Older children guide and assist younger students. The younger students observe and learn from the older students. During "work time", children choose materials from the different areas in the classroom.
